A miner was still trapped in the Phalaborwa Mining Company in Limpopo, north of Johannesburg, the union said.
The fire started Sunday around 1:25 am, according to the union. Workers have been ordered to evacuate to the nearest refugee chamber, a protection chamber, the union said.
A team later found the bodies of two miners, and a survivor, but high temperatures, which reached 67 degrees Celsius (about 152 degrees Fahrenheit), made relief efforts difficult, the union said. The bodies of three miners were later recovered from the chamber, the union said.
The injured worker was transported to the hospital, according to the union.
"The search for an employee continues and an investigation will begin once the last employee has been found and the underground fire has been confined and the area declared safe," said the department's Mineral Resources Department. South Africa.
