The National Prosecution Authority has confirmed that an officer identified in the Ahmed Timol case, Joao Rodrigues, aged 80, will appear in court on a murder charge.

"He is appearing before the Johannesburg Magistrates Court, and [is] charged with murder and defeating the ends of justice," NPA spokesman Phindi Mjonondwane told News24.

A statement from the Foundation for Human Rights and Justice and Accountability Network also confirmed the appearance of the police sergeant from the former branch of security.

Nearly 46 years after his death, the High Court of the North Gauteng in Pretoria that Timol, as his family had always supported him, died at the hands of the police from the apartheid security branch during his detention.

Judge Billy Mothle concluded that Timol had not committed suicide because he had committed suicide but that he had died from being pushed to fall, a act that was committed by members of the security branch with dolus eventualis as a form of intent, and prima facie tantamount to murder. "

Mothle says three witnesses contradict the version of Rodrigues' events around Timol Death.

" Rodrigues is staged as part of the concealment to hide the truth ", and thus became an accomplice to the murder, he said at the time.

"Rodrigues should be the subject of an investigation for making contradictory statements under oath and he has already been convicted of perjury. "
