Archbishop Tutu and his wife spend a wedding anniversary at Tygerberg Children's Hospital

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and his wife Leah Tutu, married for 63 years, celebrated their birthday at Tygerberg Children's Hospital.

The couple spent Monday's day at the Children's Medical Facility

. Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation, Tutus have been very active clients of the hospital for the last 18 years.

They also raised funds to help Retcam the hospital, which monitors the eyes of infants at high risk and prevents blindness.

During their visit, Leah received winter scarves.

As a hospital of the University of Stellenbosch, the Children's Hospital is responsible for providing tertiary medical care to about half of the Western Cape children who are in need – as well as to children from further afield.

Bailey added that Tutus regularly told Foundation staff over the years that they found the commitment and compbadion of people in the hospital "extraordinary and exhilarating". Tutu almost died of tuberculosis when he was young, after overcoming polio in his early days.

He was also unable to study medicine because of financial difficulties but achieved his dream by joining a clbad of medical students at the hospital. A few years ago

Leah studied nursing after completing an education.
