Johannesburg – The founding president of the South African Municipal Workers' Union (Samwu) Petrus Mashishi is dead, Secretary General Simon Mathe, 72, who died at his home in Soweto, said Wednesday, "Comrade Mashishi has was elected President of Samwu at its inaugural congress in 1987 following the merger of several unions, including the Union of Transport and General Workers of which he was a shop steward, "said Mr. Mathe.
"After his election as President of Samwu, Comrade Mashishi served the union with diligence and dedication for more than 20 years as the first union delegate and president."
He said that Mashishi was loved and respected by municipal workers across the country, earning him the title of "union man".
"So we are saddened and devastated by his pbading, the death of a man who directed Samwu toward his workplace activism," he said.
"We drop our banners in memory and in honor of comrade Mashishi, sincere condolences to the Mashishi family during this painful period."
