Free state municipalities avoid Eskom electricity cuts with payment agreements

Eskom will keep the light in three municipalities of the Free State that have entered into new payment agreements with the electricity company.

Sending to Fin24 by telephone Tuesday afternoon, Eskom spokesman Khulu Phasiwe said the municipalities Masilonyana and Nala entered into payment agreements with Eskom. Later that evening, he informed Fin24 that Tokologo Municipality had also entered into a new payment agreement.

The three municipalities were to cease operations on Wednesday, July 18, due to non-payment.

On Monday, Phasiwe said that Eskom would only be open to new payment arrangements if the municipalities paid substantial sums.

By the time he told Fin24 that Tokologo owed Eskom more than R30m. According to Phasiwe Nala must Eskom near R200m.

He could not disclose the amounts the municipalities had paid Eskom on Tuesday.

He explained that Nala's next payment date is August 1st. Masilonyana must pay Eskom on August 25th. Tokologo must pay Eskom on July 20 for unpaid accounts in June.

Phasiwe said that the current arrangement is not ideal, but it seems to work while municipalities pay to avoid power interruptions.

NOTICE: The municipality of Masilonyana in the Free State, which was to be interrupted tomorrow in case of non-payment, has now concluded a payment agreement with Eskom. The planned power cuts are therefore suspended until further notice. @ OFM9497 @LesediFM Event: @volksbladnuus
