The province on Wednesday launched the Council for Social Cohesion and Moral Regeneration of KwaZulu-Natal, which will be co-chaired by Anglican Bishop Rubin Phillip and Prime Minister Willies Mchunu.
The council will include 30 governments and 64 non-government members – representing businesses, faith-based groups, unions and youth in the province.
The call for social cohesion and the birth of the Council was first discussed when sporadic attacks against African nationals began in 2014 and when armed groups demonstrated their intention to hunt all African nationals from KwaZulu-Natal.
"These attacks remain a source of embarrbadment and we never want to see them again," said Prime Minister and MEC for economic development and tourism, Sihle Zikalala.
Zikalala told representatives of religious, cultural and social organizations that he thought that "through unity in action, we can advance the KZN towards a future prosperous. "
Breaking the mandate of the council, Zikalala said that the council of members should provide a platform for engagement among stakeholders that would contribute to deepening social cohesion, moral regeneration and building of the nation.
The council will advise provincial and local government structures and civil society on social cohesion.
"This council should serve to guide the development of a strategy of social cohesion and moral regeneration, and plan for and oversee the province's implementation.
" They must guide processes to facilitate an open dialogue between civil society structures and promoting the cooperation of civil society sectors ", he said.
One of the main tasks of the council will be to mobilize" work teams " "The Principle of Unity in Diversity is Based on the Respect We Have for Unity for each other, and it is a set of shared values that underpin our efforts to deepen social cohesion and moral regeneration in this province, "said Zikalala.
