Machel was not supposed to speak during the service but rather attended the church celebrations where Mandela would go on Sunday while he was living in Orlando.

Reverend Peter Storey told the faithful that he had the privilege of being able to receive letters from Mandela while he was imprisoned at Robben Island.

"One does not usually expect prison letters during Aparthied but I did receive a letter from Tata congratulating me on being elected in the leadership role of the 39, Methodist Church, "said Storey.

He remembered the stories Mandela had told him about his detention and believed that the situation in South Africa was going to improve.

"Apartheid was one of the worst things we humans have brought to this world," said Storey. "But one of the best things we did was believe in a chef like Mandela."

Bishop Ziphozihle Siwa, the bishop president of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa described Mandela as a man who defended his people despite his prolonged incarceration.

"He served as a moral landmark and was a source of inspiration that another reality may exist," Siwa said.

He urged the faithful to take a leaf from Mandela's book and dream of a better future as that was what Madiba believed.

"We should take a leaf from his book and realize that we can dream for the future.

If at some point we experience some nightmares, this is not not the end because the future is there, "he said.
