Former Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Mduduzi Manana, resigned from his MP position to try to "evade responsibility"
. Manana was scheduled to appear Wednesday before the Joint Committee on Ethics and Members' Interests.
The resignation comes after the former deputy minister pleaded guilty to three charges against him for an incident at the Cubana restaurant in Fourways, Johannesburg, last year. By the time he resigned from his position as second in command at the Ministry of Higher Education, he stated that he was "ashamed" of the act.
He was also charged with badaulting his domestic worker, Christine Wiro. this year. The NPA announced Monday that it had refused to pursue the case – and Manana had denied any wrongdoing.
