A manhunt is currently underway for a businessman who has been kidnapped near his offices in Cape Town. According to some sources, a ransom of 50 Bitcoin was requested for the return of the man.
Police reluctant to confirm rumors of ransom demands Bitcoin
According to a News24 article, Liyaqat Parker was kidnapped by five armed men at 9:10 am Monday from his company in Parow, Cape Town. Since then, rumors have circulated that a ransom has been made for his return.
The reports come from a second source of local information. Netwerk24 reported that the ransom demand was made by email on Tuesday
However, the local police are reluctant to comment on the 50 Bitcoin claims because of the "very sensitive" nature of the case. Walid Brown, family spokesperson and lawyer, commented:
"I do not have this information although I've also seen the rumor."
A spokesman for the Western Cape Police, Captain FC van Wyk:
This case is also being investigated by our provincial detectives. Please let us know because we can not disclose the details of the investigation that has not yet been brought to court.
Parker, 65, is a successful businessman in the Western Cape region. He is a founding member of the Food Property Group, as well as a member of the Al-Amien Foods Board of Directors. The abduction victim also holds a high position at Brimstone Investment
Family members made a sincere statement for the safe return of their parent Tuesday afternoon:
"Our father and brother is an elderly man. may be involved or know people who may be related to this crime, just to free him unhurt before his health deteriorates. "
Advocacy continued, highlighting Parker's involvement in his business, as well as local philanthropic causes.The statement mentioned his long-term involvement with the Children's Hospital Association
The Parker case is not the first kidnapping incident involving Bitcoin ransom in South Africa.In May of this year, NewsBTC reported the case of 12-year-old Katlego Marite. The officials demanded that 15 Bitcoin be paid for the safe return of the youth, and he was later sent back to his family, but the local police did not disclose the details of his return.
Elsewhere , a crypto exchange employee Pavel Lerner was taken from outside his office in Kiev, Ukraine, last year.More than $ 1 million in Bitcoin claims have been satisfied and Lerner was released three days after the purpose of his ordeal.
