SABC spent 167 million rand in sports fees between 2017 and 2018

DURBAN – The South African national broadcaster, SABC, has spent hundreds of millions of rand every year to buy sports rights.

Nomvula Mkonyane, Minister of Communications, gave an overview of the amount spent on sports rights as part of a written response to questions from Werner Horn of the Democratic Alliance.

In her response, the Minister revealed how much the public broadcaster spends on sports rights and the process of acquiring those rights.

This amount was spent on sports broadcasting rights, particularly in relation to the original SABC budget that had been earmarked for each of those years.

Accompanying the minister, those involved in negotiations on sports rights include James Aguma, Ben Ngubane, Hlaudi Motsoeneng and Sully Motsweni.

Mokonyane added that none of the negotiators received any bonuses for obtaining the sports rights of the SABC.

The SABC confirmed that Robert Marawa, a well-known sports presenter, will be back in their business. Marawa will return to SABC starting August 1st, 2018.
