Mqu said the unrest broke out Tuesday night after a memorandum was handed over to the police to demand the withdrawal of the charges against Ndzongana. The charges against Ndzongana were unclear, but Mq suspected that they could include incitement to violence and destruction of property.

Mq told News24 that Ndzongana had posted a Facebook post that could have been interpreted as a call for action. after a fence was erected in Schulphoek without consultation with the community.
