Cape Town – The ANC claims that the expropriation of land without compensation will be a mixed system involving private ownership of land, soothing fears of expropriation of private property.

The Western Cape Branch Launches its Provincial Summit in Stellenbosch Friday

In a statement released by the party this week, the summit "will engage Western Cape communities and stakeholders on agrarian reform and redistribution" .

Ronald Lamola, ANC NEC member in charge of the land issue "Our economy is structured according to an open mixed system, which means that the government can not own all the land by itself. Title deeds will still be granted to secure private ownership of the land and these deeds will also provide security of tenure.

"In the past, about 87% of our people were excluded from land ownership, we went from restitution to redistribution, and if we continue with restitution, there will be very little progress," said Lamola.

The ANC Western Cape called the summit before parliamentary hearings in land expropriation without compensation that begins early next month.

The summit ends tomorrow.
