From Friday, South Africans can expect to see a new five-rand coin as well as new tickets in ATMs and local vendors. The Reserve Bank of South Africa (SARB) has printed 400 million tickets in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of former President Nelson Mandela.
The notes tell of Madiba's life from birth in Mvezo in the Eastern Cape until his inauguration. the first democratically elected president of South Africa in 1994.
"Tickets are available today, they will be put into circulation today and will develop in the coming months" said the director of currency management, Pradeep. Maharaj told the media at the launch on Friday.
"This is your money and not our money and you win and you decide how you want to spend it and it becomes valuable because you trust it, the more you know and know about your notes, the easier becomes for Maharaj added.
The SARB also launched a mobile app to educate citizens about security, technical and design features on banknotes. "Maharaj said the application was still part of the banks' program to further educate people about banknotes and use them as a platform to interact with people.

The R10 rating illustrates his life in Mvezo, the R20 is a snapshot of his time in Soweto and the R50 note inspires his life in Howick. Robben Island is on the R100, and the R200 rating marks his tenure as president.

The central bank also went the extra mile by including some minor improvements on the R5 coins. One side reflects 2018 and the other side of the room reflects 1918, the year of Madiba's birth.
