Alabama has rejected more than 65,000 COVID-19 vaccines that have expired due to low demand for injections, the state’s health official told reporters on Friday.
About 7,000 doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, 11,000 injections of Moderna and 47,000 Pfizer vaccinations were wasted, said public health official Dr Scott Harris.
“It’s unfortunate when we have such a low vaccination rate, and of course there are still so many people in the world who don’t have it, so it’s a shame,” he said. declared.
Much of Pfizer’s 47,000 doses expired last month, Harris said.
“We have a lot of vaccines available… about a million and a half doses waiting here for someone to come and take them,” he added.
Alabama is improving by getting more residents to get vaccinated against COVID-19, Harris said, noting that the state had on average more than 10,000 injections per day over the past week.
Two-thirds of those injections, he said, were the first doses of the vaccine.
“It’s encouraging, but we still have a long way to go,” said Harris.
One of the conspiracy theories circulating about vaccines is that they are ineffective.
But Harris noted that an infinitesimal number – 26 deaths, or 0.002% of all deaths from COVID-19 in Alabama – were among those fully vaccinated.
