PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A resident of Allegheny County has been diagnosed with measles.
The Allegheny County Health Department announced Tuesday that an unvaccinated adult had been treated and released from the UPMC emergency room in Shadyside on Monday and that he was recovering at home.
The resident has recently traveled abroad and this case is not related to an ongoing measles outbreak in the United States.
This is the first case of measles reported in Allegheny County since the beginning of the year.
The UPMC informs and evaluates patients and staff who may have been in contact with the individual during his stay at the hospital.
According to the health department, the resident was potentially infectious from Thursday and potential exposures may have occurred at the following locations and times:
- Giant Eagle Market District (5550 Ave Center, Pittsburgh, PA 15232)
- Friday 26 April 2019: 18h30 – 21h
- Sunday, April 28, 2019: 14h45 – 17h
- ALDI (5631 Baum Blvd, Pittsburgh, PA 15206)
- Friday, April 26, 2019: 18:30 – 20:45
According to the Ministry of Health, anyone who has been exposed would begin to show symptoms by May 20. Anyone who may have been exposed and susceptible to measles or symptoms should contact their primary health care provider immediately and report to them if they have measles.
Symptoms include rash, high fever, cough, and red, watery eyes.
The measles vaccine is available at the Department of Health Immunization Clinic located on the fourth floor of 425 First Ave. in downtown Pittsburgh. The clinic is open from 9:00 to 16:00. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. It is open from 13h. at 8 pm Wednesday.
