AMD FSR Unity demo shows big 4K FPS boosts, Ubisoft talks about using FSR in Far Cry 6

AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution was officially launched last month, but the number of games that use spatial scaling technology is still relatively small. Fortunately, that is about to change, as the next update to the widely used Unity engine will integrate FSR, making it easy for thousands of developers to implement scaling and performance-enhancing technology.

To speed up FSR’s arrival in Unity, AMD has released a demo video, which shows the performance gains developers can achieve with the technology. The “Spaceship Demo” runs at around 99 fps at 4K with a Radeon RX 6800 XT, but if you enable FidelityFX Super Res, the demo can run at 138 fps with Ultra settings and 189 fps in Performance mode. You can check out the demo for yourself below.

AMD FSR is now open source, will soon be added to RE Village, Arcadegeddon, Necromunda Hired Gun, Edge of Eternity

FideltyFX Super Resolution might not be quite DLSS, but those are some pretty impressive performance gains nonetheless. FSR will be available in Unity starting with update 2021.2b, which is expected to be phased out soon. Meanwhile, Ubisoft also detailed how they will implement FSR in the upcoming Far Cry 6 …

To push the visual fidelity of [Far Cry 6] and an immersive gaming experience, we’ve partnered with AMD to implement next-generation rendering techniques, such as DirectX ray tracing and AMD FidelityFX features. When implementing these next-gen features we were challenged because we want the majority of gamers to have a smooth and enjoyable experience without having to lower their settings. Using AMD FidelityFX super resolution helps us solve this problem, as it means more gamers can enjoy Far Cry 6 with their graphics settings increased without compromising frame rate. RSF […] is easy to integrate into our development pipeline and offers a substantial performance improvement while maintaining excellent image quality.

Far Cry 6 launches on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X / S, PS5, PS5, Stadia, and Luna on October 7.
