New York Governor Andrew Cuomo will soon receive the International Emmy Founders Award for his daily television briefings on the coronavirus pandemic, the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced on Friday. The Academy said Cuomo would be recognized for “his leadership during the Covid-19 pandemic and his masterful use of television to educate and calm people around the world” in a show that aired live Monday.
“The Governor’s 111 Daily Briefings have worked so well because he effectively created TV shows, with characters, storylines, and success and failure stories,” said Bruce Paisner, President and CEO of the ‘International Academy, in a statement announcing the decision. “People around the world tuned in to find out what was going on, and New York City became a symbol of the determination to fight back.”
In the early months of the pandemic, when New York City was one of the world’s epicenters for the virus, Cuomo held daily media briefings to educate the public on the status of the outbreak. The 111 consecutive daily briefings, which ended on June 19, have attracted a total of 59 million viewers, the Academy said.
The Founders Prize is awarded to a person or organization that “crosses cultural boundaries to touch our common humanity”. Previous recipients include Vice President Al Gore, Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg.
More than 580,000 people have tested positive in the state and more than 34,000 have died since the start of the pandemic, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. And while the restrictions have kept the number of daily cases from rising rapidly over the summer, Cuomo has always been criticized by some for the way he has handled the pandemic, especially in nursing homes around the world. Some have condemned the governor’s Emmy on Twitter, writing that the price ignores the problems the state experienced during the pandemic.
“This award makes sense because Cuomo is actually not a knowledgeable, empathetic governor – he’s just playing one on TV,” wrote one progressive activist.
New York is currently experiencing fewer hospitalizations than at its worst time in the pandemic, according to the Associated Press. But like the rest of the country, cases are increasing as the holiday season approaches. Earlier this week, New York City closed its schools after achieving a 3% positivity rate.
