According to a recently published article, the Andromeda galaxy may have committed a fratricide on a cosmic scale about 2 billion years ago, tearing a huge galaxy and cannibalizing a large part of the body. The victim was probably the third largest member of the local group of galaxies, behind his sister galaxy, the Milky Way, and his attacker, the Andromeda spiral galaxy of 220,000 light-years.
