FOR one night only, Sea Life Sydney Aquarium will give the public a rare chance to witness the secret life of sea life in its new $5 million Day and Night on the Reef exhibit.

On November 27, the aquarium will open for 24-hours, hosting guided tours to give guests an insight into life under the sea from dusk to dawn.

Marine biologists will be leading the tours, explaining the behaviours of the 500 sea creatures which call the interactive exhibit home, including Myrtle the beloved Green Sea Turtle, loggerhead turtles, reef sharks, sawfish, jellyfish and Bow the 126kg Queensland Grouper.

Sea Life Sydney Aquarium’s Curator, Chris Brown, said they were eager to welcome the public in for the special night experience.

“For the first time ever, we’re offering guests the chance to see exactly what the aquarium looks like all through the day and the night. This includes an after-dark guided tour through popular exhibits such as Dugong Island and Shark Alley,” he said.

“It also includes an exclusive first look into the brand new Day and Night on the Reef experience giving them the chance to get up close and personal with upside down jellyfish!”

The exhibit was seven months in the making with the curators and construction workers witnessing shark mating and a male seahorse giving birth.

The whole reef changes at night as different creatures become active, including the Whitetip Reef Sharks which patrol as a pack and the critically endangered Sawfish. These nocturnal creatures use their amazing adaption, a ‘sharp toothed rostrum’, to dig for food.

Sea Life is billing the exhibit, which holds 1.7 million litres of water, as “the largest Great Barrier Reef display in the world.”

The new reef exhibit officially opens on November 24.
