SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – You may remember "zombie deer disease", a term for chronic wasting disease in deer that made headlines earlier this year.

But apparently, officials warn of "zombie raccoons" after observationsseveral cities and states, including Chicago, Illinois.

According to an article from the city of Dublin, Ohio, where sightings have been reported, "zombie raccoons" are due to the distemper virus that causes in raccoons "abnormal neurological signs" .

The disease can be fatal for dogs, authorities said, so it's important to watch your furry friends.

Apparently, that means pretty much what you may already think: Raccoons will display zombie-like behavior because of distemper.

Symptoms include:

  • Walk around and be confused and / or approach people or pets
  • Stagnate or fall while walking
  • Showing their teeth
  • Have "bright" eyes

City officials said the eyes of infected raccoons may look shiny and have an "extremely greenish" hue due to abnormal mineral deposits associated with the disease.

Humans can not get Parkinson's disease, but according to the Humane Society, humans can unknowingly transfer the disease without knowing it.

The disease is highly contagious and can spread in a variety of ways, including by inhalation and contact with raccoon stool.
