UTICA – The back-to-back losses to Cicero-North Syracuse and Corcoran, where he scored seven combined points, left many wondering if the Baldwinsville football team was, once again, disappointed with his offense.
An emphatic response was provided in Saturday’s game at Utica Proctor, where the Bees came to life in a way the Raiders couldn’t handle, leading to a 39-18 win as B’ville improved to 4-2 in total.
It took the Bees less than nine minutes to reach their full production for the previous two weeks.
Sam Mellinger broke through Proctor’s secondary on a 29-yard sprint to the end zone on his team’s first possession. Then B’ville’s defense forced a fumble and Ethan Haust recovered it, leading to another practice which, at Raiders 12, saw Caden Cox find Nick Huhtala in the end zone.
Once again, the Bees’ defense came out on top, stopping a Proctor practice in their own 20 early in the second quarter. Then it kept things calm until a big end at half-time.
Cox threw his second touchdown pass of the afternoon to Amir Akins from nine yards. And just before the break, B’ville hit the Nine Proctor again and, again, from there Cox threw to the end zone, where Huhtala caught up with him.
It all created a 25-0 halftime margin, but the Bees weren’t done unleashing their new passing game.
After the Raiders finally entered the table in the third quarter, B’ville responded three minutes later when, from Proctor 41, Cox joined Huhtala for the third time on a scoring pass.
To his credit, the Raiders closed the lead to 32-18 late in the fourth quarter before a Bees practice won, Mellinger scoring on a four-yard rush.
Achieving an enviable attack balance, the Bees saw Cox complete 10 of 14 passes for 176 yards, while Mellinger gained 139 yards on 21 carries. Colin Doyle had three catches for 64 yards.
Defensively, Nick Foster was all over the place, registering 19 tackles. Vince Samoraj contributed 10 tackles, with Mellinger seven tackles, Amari Akins six tackles and Haust five tackles.
B’ville sits fourth in the Class AA division standings, with the regular season race up for grabs after Liverpool knocked out the no. Cicero-North Syracuse, ranked 5th, 21-14, and Corcoran won his fourth consecutive spot against the Rome Free Academy.
Another home game awaits the Bees as Henninger heads to Pelcher-Arcaro stadium this Friday. Kick-off is at 7 p.m., an hour later than usual, as the match will be broadcast on Spectrum Sports.
