A Beverly Hills plastic surgeon died of complications from COVID-19 after a patient, who later tested positive for the coronavirus, coughed him up during an injection into his lips.
Dr Payman Simoni, 50, died on January 8 of a brain hemorrhage after being placed in a medically induced coma when his lungs began to deteriorate.
Longtime family friend Katy Amiri-Younesi said the death came as a “ shock ” to those close to the father of two.
“The shock was that he was in perfect health,” Amiri-Younesi told KCAL.
“He’s a doctor, I called him when I had COVID. He was telling me what to do.
The father-of-two performed the elective procedure on a woman in December, who had her temperature checked and completed a coronavirus questionnaire, according to TMZ.
The woman without a mask, however, was not tested for COVID-19 but called the doctor a few days later to tell him that she had tested positive for the virus.
Friends of Simoni told KCAL he felt “ perfectly fine ” for about a week, went into quarantine and started to experience symptoms.

The doctor was taken to Cesars-Sinai Medical Center when he started to feel short of breath and quickly deteriorated.
Last May, Beverly Hills City Council members voted 4-1 to overturn its moratorium on elective surgeries amid the pandemic to match state regulations that had just been relaxed by the governor of California. Gavin Newsom, The Los Angeles Times reported.
The city council argued that residents should be able to receive treatment for medical conditions such as a heart valve and tooth pain – although this has opened the door to cosmetic surgery.
Advisor Dr. Julian Gold, anesthesiologist, said at the time that “the butt and breast thing is the smallest part of the conversation”.

Friends and family said Simoni was ‘fun-loving and ambitious’ and had recently obtained her magician’s certificate.
In November, Simoni filmed an upcoming episode of “ Gown and Out in Beverly Hills ” with Patrik Simpson in which he performed the same procedure, TMZ reported.
Simpson told the outlet that Simoni also wore a mask during her surgery – but the two posed for a photo without a mask during a post-op appointment.
