The crew extended their divisional lead to 9.5 games in a 4-1 win over the Reds on Wednesday night. On paper, the competition was tight, but the Brewers seemed in control from the first innings.
The pitching staff combined for sixteen strikeouts. Ten of them belonged to Brandon Woodruff, who turned brilliant again after a few tough starts and a tough start to the game. He allowed the first two hitters to reach and allowed the first runner in the first two innings. After that, he was pretty much off, leading with his stellar fastball. Four hits marked his performance. He shut out the Reds at six, stepped on no one and struck out ten strikes.
Woodruff, not particularly effective at the start, was well supported by the bullpen. Brad Boxberger struck out two batting strikes in an inning of three up and three down. Devin Williams won three, three with an assist from Avisaíl García. Jake Cousins dropped out of the shutout in the ninth on a Nick Castellanos home run, but he also hit the side on a nasty mix of sliders and sinking fastballs.
Luis Castillo also pitched well and gave the Reds a fighting chance for most of the game, limiting the Brewers’ offense to two runs in 6.1 innings. -back double to lead Christian Yelich and put the first run of the game on the board.
The next time the Brewers scored a point, Avi was hit with a pitch and moved up to second on a single that punctuated a masterful strike from Luis Urías. He simply had to come home from second place after Jace Peterson hit a ground brace over the center field fence.
García had a full night, also doing his part in the race prevention service. His first big game was the ball from a throw to second from deep right field that stole an extra baseline from Nick Castellanos.
The second time Avi won defensively, he preserved Devin Williams’ scoreless eighth goal and, at the time, the shutout, pulling out what would otherwise have been a Max Schrock home run.
The Brewers went head-to-head, a small ball to tack on some insurance points in the eighth. Kolten Wong started the set with a walk, Christian Yelich hit a pitch error and Wong scored on a wild shot from Amir Garrett to take the Brewers to 3-0.
Garrett intentionally walked with Avi, which was probably a good move considering how the night was going for each of them, but the crew once again sneaked past the soft pitches of Rowdy Tellez and Luis Urías. This brought the crew to 4-0 at the end of the round. The ball did not leave the infield.
Again, the shutout would end in the ninth when Jake Cousins gave up a home run in what was otherwise a strong inning, but that wouldn’t stop the Brewers from the win, a series win and a even greater advance on the division.
The crew will look to extend the division’s lead as they wrap up the Reds’ series at American Family Field tomorrow at 1:10 CT.
