A California resident who tested positive for COVID-19 in late December died last week several hours after being injected with the vaccine, officials said.

The individual, who has not been named, is believed to have died Thursday in Placer County, in the greater Sacramento area.

Their deaths were announced by the Placer County Sheriff’s Office in a Facebook post on Saturday, with the department adding that the incident was still under investigation.

“ The individual received a COVID-19 vaccine several hours before his death on January 21, 2021, ” the agency wrote. “The vaccine was not administered by Placer County Public Health.

It is not known if the person received the Moderna of Pfizer vaccine.

“There are several local, state and federal agencies that are actively investigating this matter; any report concerning the cause of death is premature, pending the outcome of the investigation. Our hearts go out to the family of the deceased, ”the sheriff’s office continued.

“We are working together and will continue to use data and science to determine how to do this.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is monitoring reports of allergic reactions to the COVID-19 vaccine, but health officials say the risk of a serious reaction is “ extremely rare. ”

Last week, California state epidemiologist Dr. Erica S. Pan recommended that suppliers stop giving a batch of Moderna vaccine “ out of extreme caution ” after it has caused an allergic reaction in less than ten people.

“Although no vaccine or medical procedure is safe, the risk of a serious adverse reaction is very low,” the California Department of Health wrote.

“Although there is less data on side effects related to the Moderna vaccine, a similar vaccine shows that the expected rate of anaphylaxis is approximately 1 in 100,000.”

Vaccines are known to have side effects including fatigue, headaches, chills and fever, but these are ‘normal signs that your body is building protection’ and should go away within a few days. the CDC said.

Speaking of the person’s death in Placer County, Dr Dean Blumberg, an infectious disease expert at UC Davis Children’s Hospital, said the folks at KTLA shouldn’t be too quick to blame.

“A lot of people are going to link to the vaccine because of the timing,” he said. ‘[My] the first tendency is that it is probably not related to the vaccine.

“We know that with serious allergic reactions that occur after vaccination, the vast majority of these occur 15 to 30 minutes after vaccination,” said Blumberg.

He added that while the death occurred several hours after receiving the vaccine, it is probably not the severe allergic reaction, anaphylaxis, that concerns us.

The country’s leading infectious disease specialist, Dr Anthony Fauci, recommends that people who have tested positive for the virus not be tested until at least 90 days after the date of their initial infection.

While vaccination efforts are well advanced, the state continues to be ravaged by the virus.

In the past month, about 423 Californians have died from the coronavirus each day, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

The state has recorded 36,405 deaths and more than 3.1 million cases since the pandemic began in March.

Across the United States, 24,995,420 cases of the virus have been reported and 414,441 Americans have died.
