According to the state veterinarian, an outbreak of canine brucellosis in central Iowa has been attributed to a small dog breeding facility in Marion County.

Dr. Jeff Kaisand said the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Management is currently briefing people who have custody of exposed dogs. animals and facilities are quarantined until dogs can be tested.

Brucellosis can be transmitted to animals and humans. The threat to most pet owners is considered low, but dog breeders, veterinarians and anyone who comes into contact with blood, tissues and fluids during delivery can higher risk.

All pet owners who have recently acquired a new small breed dog from Marion County must contact their veterinarian. Human health problems should be directed to the Iowa Department of Public Health or your doctor.
