Carey Price update: G-Canadians to take 30-day leave

Montreal Canadiens G Carey Price is taking 30 days off the team as they prepare for the start of the 2021-22 season, general manager Marc Bergevin said at a press conference Thursday morning. Price will be away for at least a month to focus on his mental health and his family. Bergevin said the absence “could be longer” but didn’t know for how long. Price will enter the NHLPA Player Assistance Program.

Price helped lead the Habs to the Stanley Cup Final in 2021, achieving his best playoff run of his career. Price went 13-9 with an GAA of 2.28 and .924 SV% for Montreal, which lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning in five games. The price is under contract until 2025-2026 and makes $ 10.5 million per year.

With Price leaving the team, the Habs will likely have Jake Allen as their number one goalie to start the season. Montreal opens 2021-22 next Wednesday against the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Air Canada Center. Behind Allen on the goaltending depth chart is Samuel Montembeault, who is 24 and has only made 25 NHL appearances with the Florida Panthers.

The Canadiens have a 50/1 record to win the Stanley cup to DraftKings Sportsbook before the last week of preseason. The prize is also listed at 14/1 to win the Vézina Trophy.
