Cases, deaths on the rise

MADISON, Wisconsin (WBAY) – More than 2,000 cases of COVID-19 (2,088) were diagnosed in Wisconsin in the latest tests, but the State Department of Health Services (DHS). That took the 7-day moving average from 1,482 cases per day to 1,670 on Tuesday after falling over the weekend. However, as a percentage of people tested, the positivity rate is declining, with the 7-day average decreasing by a tenth of a percentage point to 7.6%. We’re still well above where health officials can consider the virus to be managed – that’s a positivity rate of less than 3%.

The number of deaths from COVID-19 in Wisconsin is increasing, to an average of 15 deaths per day, compared to 13 on average yesterday. Deaths were in double digits again on Tuesday, with 12 more people added to the toll. These include deaths in Forest and Sheboygan counties. Since the start of the pandemic, 7,771 people in Wisconsin have died from illness caused by the coronavirus.

DHS cautions that these could be underreported numbers. It indicates that a system performance issue is causing a delay in processing data and that it works to resolve the issue.

State figures show an additional 153 people have been hospitalized for COVID-19 in the past 24 hours. Considering discharges and deaths, the state’s number of hospitalizations declined on Tuesday, but not locally. The Wisconsin Hospital Association (WHA) has reported 1,055 currently hospitalized COVID-19 patients statewide, including 314 in intensive care – 13 fewer in intensive care and one fewer patient overall since Monday. Hospitals in northeastern counties were treating 113 patients, including 30 in intensive care – 3 fewer in intensive care but 8 more patients in total. Fox Valley region has 84 COVID-19 patients, including 15 in intensive care; that’s 2 more in intensive care and 9 more overall.

Attorney Aurora Health says its hospitals in Wisconsin recorded 69% more COVID-19 admissions over the past month, but hospitalizations were down 1.6% last week. Advocate’s Executive Medical Director for Infectious Diseases and Prevention, Dr Robert Citronberg, said: “Our hospital admissions numbers have flattened somewhat in recent days, which is expected as the number of COVID cases- 19 in the community begins to decline. Vaccines work, and as more people are vaccinated, we can reduce these pandemic numbers and come back closer to normal life. “

We should get a county-by-county update on the spread of the disease tomorrow or Thursday. Last week DHS reported viral activity very high in 56 counties and raised in the other 16 in the previous two weeks. However, the state saw no significant change in the number of new coronavirus cases from the start to the end of the two-week period.

For a preview, it might be worth looking at the wastewater monitoring which tests the water that a community drains for the virus, and reports are updated more frequently. Tuesday’s latest report showed a sustained increase in Clintonville and Marinette, while there has been no significant change over the past two weeks at Appleton, Berlin, De Pere, Fox River Pollution Control Center, Green Bay , Manitowoc, Oshkosh, Peshtigo and Sheboygan.

Vaccination

Green Lake County became the last county in our region to have half of its population vaccinated, joining Brown, Calumet, Door, Manitowoc, Menominee, Outagamie, Sheboygan and Winnebago counties. To date, 46.7% of the population of Green Lake County have completed the vaccine series, which includes 60.1% of adults.

Statewide, 55.8% of the population has received at least one injection, including 52.5% of Wisconsinians who are fully vaccinated. 3,054,188 people completed their vaccination series, including 2,873,354 adults, or 63.1% of the adult population.

  • 65 years and over: 85.1% received the vaccine (+0.0) / 83.1% fully vaccinated (+0.1)

Later this week, we expect DHS to report the number of cases, hospitalizations and deaths in August involving people who were fully vaccinated versus those who had not completed their vaccinations or had never received. vaccine. DHS says it plans to publish these comparisons no later than the 15th of each month in the future. In July, the rate was 369.2 cases, 18.2 hospitalizations and 1.1 deaths per 100,000 people who were not fully vaccinated, and 125.4 cases, 4.9 hospitalizations and 0.1 deaths per 100 000 people who had at least two weeks after completing their vaccine. series.
