POLAND – The 14th Annual Celebrate Poland Community Event will take place Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the grounds of Poland Village Hall, 308 S. Main St.

It will present the second annual softball match between Polish firefighters and Polish police. A parade, food, music, a craft show, a Poland Idol contest, children’s activities and fireworks will be on the program.

Firefighters in Poland invite people to take part in the annual parade, for which the queue is at 6 p.m.

Everyone is also welcome to participate in the annual Poland Idol Competition. The judges are all musically trained and will choose the winners in four age categories.

The Celebrate Poland this year committee has moved the date of the event.

The event is traditionally scheduled for the last weekend of June, but for 2021 it has been moved to a Saturday day. This was due to the fact that the Committee of 10 spent two years without fundraising, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

With the new fall date, this opened up the possibility of new fall events. One of them is a pumpkin decoration contest.

“We are so excited as the event approaches,” said Cindy Best of the Celebrate Poland committee. “We’ve decided since it’s fall, let’s do it right.”

She continued, “We have a few new things. First, this year’s pie flavor for the baking contest is pumpkin. So we need bakers to bring their best pumpkin pie. We also have a pumpkin decoration contest. I mean, you can’t have a fall event without it.

There will be four categories, broken down by age. Participants can visit Countryside Farms in Poland before the event. They then decorate the pumpkin at home and bring it to the event. Decorated pumpkins can be dropped from 2 p.m. on the day of the celebration. Judging will take place at 5 p.m. just before the parade.

Leaflets will be sent home with the school children and are also available at the Polish village hall.

Another new addition this year, Best said, is B&T Chainsaw Carvers. Sculptors will demonstrate their skills and also bring in a sculpted bulldog which will be put up for silent auction. Bids can be placed all day. The winner will be announced at 9:00 p.m. before the fireworks display.

“We also have our old standards Chalk the Walk, Poland Idol, Market Place, Kids World with a petting zoo, games and bounces,” Best said. “The fireworks display this year will be at 9:30 pm We also have 16 food vendors, many of whom are new to the event. You can register on the day of the event for Poland Idol, Chalk the Walk and the Pumpkin Pie Pastry Contest. It is also not too late to have a place in our marketplace.

Donations are still key and with the governor’s green light to organize events again, there was little time left to prepare for this year’s event. Those interested in supporting the annual event can visit the Celebrate Poland Facebook page or follow the link on the Poland Village website.

Best said it will be considered the 14th annual event. She said 2020, which would have been No.14, just won’t count.
