EVANSVILLE, Ind. (Inside INdiana Business) – Evansville-based CenterPoint Energy Indiana North is looking to continue its natural gas infrastructure improvements in the state. The utility, a subsidiary of Texas-based CenterPoint Energy Inc. (NYSE: CNP), has filed an application with the Indiana Utilities Regulatory Commission to move forward with the 1 plan, $ 2 billion.
CenterPoint says the project will involve replacing more than 340 miles of bare steel and cast iron distribution pipes with new pipes, most of which will be plastic. The project will also include the inspection and modernization of transmission pipelines.
If approved by the IURC, CenterPoint says the project will result in an adjustment in monthly customer invoices, even if it won’t go into effect until 2023. A utility spokesperson told Inside INdiana Business that the exact amount to be adjusted was not yet finalized.
“While these infrastructure improvements are essential to ensure that federal requirements are met, the affordability of our natural gas service remains a priority,” said Richard Leger, vice president of natural gas distribution for Indiana. and Ohio at CenterPoint, in a press release. “As these enhancements are completed, we will continue to operate a safe and reliable delivery system with minimal impact on customer invoices. “
The project, according to CenterPoint, will build on a seven-year gas system modernization plan that began in 2013. The utility says that for the past seven years, pipeline replacement work has been underway. in more than 50 cities in North Central, Central and Southeast Indiana.
CenterPoint did not provide an estimated timeframe for an IURC decision.
