A case of measles was confirmed in the northern suburbs of Chicago and health authorities issued a warning to others who may have been exposed.

The Cook County Public Health Department released Wednesday night a list of 16 sites in the northern suburbs and downtown Chicago where the infected person had gone before the discovery of the disease. They include a school in Deerfield, a fitness center in Glencoe, a restaurant and theater in Chicago, and grocery stores in Northbrook and Niles.

Health officials alert the public to the risk of exposure to this highly contagious disease, which can remain suspended in the air for hours after the departure of an infected person. Measles can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia and swelling of the brain. The resident of the northern suburbs who have been diagnosed with measles recently visited a country "with continued transmission of measles," officials said. The person is no longer contagious.

Illinois has treated an average of just over five measles cases per year in recent years, with six cases reported so far in 2019, according to the latest available figures. Health officials urge people to stay informed about vaccines, as parents who refused to vaccinate their children contributed to the resurgence of measles. This week, a New York suburban county has banned unvaccinated children from going to public places in an attempt to contain an epidemic of the disease.

Fever, rash, cough, runny nose and red and watery eyes are the symptoms of measles. Anyone who has visited the following places within the time indicated below – and who has measles symptoms – call a health care provider or health service before going to the doctor's office or emergency room, special measures will be taken to avoid possible additional exposure to others patients.
