The Oregon Health Authority reported 499 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday and no new deaths, with the state’s top health official describing worrying trends such as rising cases and increasing hospitalizations as further proof that we are still fighting a “resilient enemy”.
At a press conference on Friday morning, Dr Dean Sidelinger, the state epidemiologist, said Oregon saw hospitalizations rise 17% in March and the number of cases over seven days was increasing by 22%.
Sidelinger noted that the case positivity rate was also increasing, although it was below 5%, a key metric used in the last six months of the pandemic to help determine a county’s level of risk. . He noted that counties could see their risk levels increase in the coming weeks if metrics don’t improve, which means a reduction in indoor meals and other activities.
As of Friday, the case positivity rate was 4.5%, but that was above the week-long average of 4.1%.
“These are indications that despite the progress we have made,” said Sidelinger, “the virus appears to be rebounding.”
State health officials have reminded Oregonians to continue to socially distance, wear a mask in public and get a vaccination appointment if they are eligible.
Vaccines: Oregon reported 46,154 newly administered doses, including 29,325 doses given on Thursday and 16,829 from the previous days.

Who is dead: No new deaths were reported on Friday.
Hospitalizations: 157 people with confirmed cases of COVID-19 are hospitalized, two more than Thursday. There are 42 patients with COVID-19 in intensive care, three more than Thursday.
Since he started: Oregon has reported 166,013 confirmed or suspected infections and 2,385 deaths, among the lowest per capita figures in the country. To date, the state has reported 1,899,238 vaccine doses administered.
