Couples diagnosed with cancer in the following months renewed twice during treatment

A husband and a wife who have been diagnosed with cancer a few months apart claim that beating the disease together has made it an even stronger couple.

Michelle Murdock and her husband Brian, both 39, renewed their wedding vows twice during this difficult time and are now celebrating the green light.

Their problems began in 2015, when Brian was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a blood cancer.

The father of two has undergone immunotherapy and chemotherapy to fight the disease, with Michelle at his side.

The couple, the father of 8-year-old Madison and 5-year-old Logan, had just celebrated the end of Brian's treatment when Michelle found a lump in her left breast in November 2015.

Michelle, a credit executive in Chicago, was diagnosed with breast cancer the following January and had a double mastectomy a few weeks later.

She had just completed an intensive chemotherapy course and was undergoing radiotherapy after the relapse of Brian, a system engineer, in September 2016.

The two men, traveling to their local oncology unit for treatment, said the simultaneous fight against their health problems had strengthened their relationship.

"In a way, Brian's cancer diagnosis prepared us for mine," said Michelle. "When he was sick, I begged God not to take the children's dad.When one diagnosed me, I tried to overtake myself and put aside our mind." I was diagnosed, had a bilateral mastectomy and undergone surgery to remove fat from my stomach and create natural breasts. "

"When I was diagnosed again, I had the impression that we had become old hands," he said. "We had been fighting cancer for over a year at that time and when I was told he was back, I was not angry. I just needed to beat me.

The couple was open with their children about their illness, but he wanted to prevent the word "cancer" from fearing negative connotations.

The mother of two has no more cancer and Brian finished his last treatment in October. Parents say that they are now approaching their lives with a new perspective.

"As a couple, cancer has changed our view," she said. It has opened my eyes to what is important. Life is really short and it's only now.

"Before getting sick, I was very job-oriented," Brian said. "Now my family is my priority, I always work hard, but if I had the choice to spend the Saturday at work to go ahead or spend the day with my kids, the kids are getting better. every time."

The couple renewed their wedding vows twice, marking the occasions with ceremonies in Las Vegas and Oahu, Hawaii.
