A new study in Canada has found that the risk of death from Covid-19 is three and a half times higher than the threat posed by the flu, while dispelling the myth that the disease tends not to affect young people.
The results were published in the Journal of the Canadian Medical Association (CMAJ) and covered hospitalizations for influenza and Covid-19 between November 1, 2019 and June 30, 2020 at seven major hospitals in the Toronto and Mississauga areas. .
All of the patients in the study were either admitted for general treatment in a hospital or intensive care unit (ICU).

The study compared 783 hospitalizations, of 763 patients, for the flu and 1,027 hospitalizations, of 972 patients, for Covid-19.
The majority of coronavirus patients had little or no underlying illnesses and 21% of this group were under 50, dispelling another misconception that Covid-19 primarily affects the elderly.
“Almost one in three adults under 50 hospitalized for Covid-19 required intensive care and nearly one in 10 had to be readmitted to hospital after discharge,” Dr Amol Verma, of St. Michael’s Hospital, Unity Health Toronto and the University of Toronto, said.
Patients admitted for Covid-19 were more likely to require intensive care treatment, prolonged use of ventilators, and remained hospitalized longer than flu patients.
“Patients admitted to hospital in Ontario with Covid-19 had a 3.5 times higher risk of death, 1.5 times higher intensive care unit use and 1 hospital stays,” 5 times longer than patients admitted with influenza, ” Verma said, while taking the opportunity to point out that the pandemic is definitely deadlier than the seasonal flu.
