Three Humboldt County residents have died with COVID-19, including one in their 20s, the youngest resident to have died with the virus. One of those who died was in their 60s and the third in their 60s, bringing the number of residents who have died with the virus to 65.
One of those whose death was reported today was fully vaccinated, the first COVID-related death of a fully vaccinated individual reported in the county.
Humboldt County health official Dr Ian Hoffman said the fully vaccinated person who died was in his 60s. “As with any vaccine, breakthroughs do occur. Most are soft, ”he said. “The most serious cases are usually related to the age and condition of the person.”
The staff of the Departmental Operations Center extend their condolences to the families, friends and caregivers of those who have died and to all those who have lost someone to the virus.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that of more than 168 million fully vaccinated people in the United States, 1,829 have died from the virus. Although some fully vaccinated people are infected with the virus, health officials largely agree that the most effective way to prevent the serious consequences of COVID-19 is to get vaccinated.
Ninety-eight new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in the county today. The total number of residents who test positive for the virus now stands at 6,741. Three new hospitalizations have also been reported, including one in his 70s and two over 80.
Dr Hoffman stressed the importance of an extra dose of mRNA vaccine for people who are immunocompromised, saying it prompts their bodies to produce enough antibodies to protect against the more contagious Delta variant.
“We strongly urge those who are immunocompromised and who have already received two doses of an mRNA vaccine to receive an additional dose of the same vaccine now,” he said. People with weakened immune systems may be more likely to get infected even if they are fully vaccinated with two doses. The vaccines are available at public health clinics and at many local pharmacies. Walk-in people are also welcome at public health clinics, or appointments can be made in advance at MyTurn.ca.gov.

Pfizer is approved for persons 12 years of age and older, and Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are approved for persons 18 years of age and older. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Full protection against vaccination is achieved two weeks after receiving the second dose in a two-dose series or two weeks after receiving a single dose vaccine.
