Thirty-seven new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Humboldt County today, bringing to 8,021 the total number of residents who have tested positive for the virus.

Two new hospitalizations were also reported, including one in their sixties and another in their sixties, and one in their sixties died. Employees of the Department’s Operations Center extend their condolences to the friends, relatives and caregivers of all who have died.

Public health combination testing / vaccine clinics opened across the county

Starting today, testing for COVID-19 will be offered at most public health vaccination clinics, where residents will have the option of getting tested, vaccinated, or both. As always, screening and vaccination services are free. Combined clinics will be held this week in Petrolia, Honeydew, Miranda, McKinleyville, Hoopa, Willow Creek and Garberville.

Public health officials continue to urge residents to get tested, especially those who have not been vaccinated, those showing symptoms and those who have been in close contact with someone who tested positive for the virus.

Walk-in people are welcome and appointments can be made in advance at MyTurn.ca.gov. For instructions in English and Spanish on using My Turn, visit humboldtgov.org/VaccineInfo.

Pfizer is approved for persons 12 years of age and older, and Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are approved for persons 18 years of age and older. County residents between the ages of 16 and 17 can get vaccinated at public health clinics without the physical presence of a parent or guardian as long as they have a signed consent form. Children under 16 must always be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian.

Although some fully vaccinated people have experienced post-vaccination infection, health officials overwhelmingly agree that vaccination is the most effective way to reduce the incidence of serious consequences.

Full protection against vaccination is achieved two weeks after receiving the second dose in a two-dose series or two weeks after receiving a single dose vaccine.

CDC calls for increased ventilation

With cooler weather approaching and increased indoor gatherings, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends a layered approach to reduce exposure and spread of COVID-19, including vaccination, hand washing, masking, physical distancing and ventilation.

The CDC recommends increasing the flow of outside air by opening windows and doors and using fans to increase their efficiency. The CDC also recommends opening dampers beyond minimum settings to reduce or eliminate recirculated air in heating, ventilation and air conditioning or HVAC systems.

The recommended minimum filter index is 13 MERV, or minimum efficiency ratio values, which is at least 50% effective at capturing particles in the 0.3 to 1.0 micron size range and effective at 85% to capture particles from 1.0 to 3.0 micrometers.
