Men and women suffer from different symptoms of Covid, study finds.
Researchers at King’s College London looked at data from 38,000 infected adults.
They found that men were more likely to experience shortness of breath, fatigue, chills, and fever.
During this time, loss of smell, chest pain, and a persistent cough seemed to be most common in women.
Traditionally, the three main symptoms of Covid are fever, a persistent cough, and loss of smell.
But academics have found that fever is not an early feature of the disease in any age group – although it is a known symptom.

The research – which took data from Zoe’s Covid Symptom Study app – also found that people aged 60 and older were more likely to report diarrhea.
And a loss of smell – one of the hallmarks of the disease – was less common in older people.
The results, published in the journal Lancet Digital Health, are based on modeling using artificial intelligence to predict the first signs of Covid infection.

Authorities have repeatedly refused to expand the list of Covid symptoms to include more warning signs, despite evidence showing the disease has changed.

Senior author Claire Steves, King’s College London, said: “It is important for people to know that early symptoms are varied and may seem different to each member of a family or household.
“The testing guidelines could be updated to allow for earlier detection of cases, especially in the face of new, highly transmissible variants.
“This could include the use of widely available lateral flow tests for people with any of these secondary symptoms.”
Overall, the research team looked at 18 different symptoms associated with Covid.
The first signs included loss of smell, chest pain, persistent cough, abdominal pain, blisters on the feet, eye pain and unusual muscle pain.
They said their modeling study was used on the original strain of the virus that first appeared in Wuhan, China, as well as the Alpha ‘Kent’ variant of the coronavirus.
However, they added, the results suggest that the symptoms of the Delta variant and any upcoming new variants will also differ across population groups.
Study co-author Dr Marc Modat said: “As part of our study, we were able to identify that the symptom profile due to Covid differs from group to group.
“This suggests that the criteria for encouraging people to get tested should be personalized using information from individuals such as age.
“Alternatively, a broader set of symptoms could be taken into account, so that different manifestations of the disease in different groups are taken into account. ”
Studying the symptoms of ZOE Covid was one of the first studies to spot loss of taste and smell as a symptom of the virus.
The experts behind the research were successful in lobbying ministers to add it to the official list of warning signs.
Since then, he has repeatedly called for the list of symptoms to be expanded to ensure that more infections are detected in the early stages, helping to curb the spread of the virus.
They refer to other countries that have recognized many more symptoms of an infection with the virus.
For example, US authorities have identified more than 20 symptoms as a possible sign of a Covid infection.
The guidelines say Britons should only get tested for Covid if they suffer from the three main warning signs, or if they are asked to be dabbed by Test and Trace.
