DEKALB COUNTY, Georgia (WGCL) – A DeKalb County School District bus driver, who lost his battle with COVID-19 this week, loved his job, according to the man’s family.
Larry Hinton spent 24 years leading DeKalb County students to and from school. The 74-year-old man died of complications from COVID-19 on Wednesday. His family told CBS46 he had been in the hospital for over a month.
“He did that first week of school and on Sunday he said he wasn’t feeling well.
Hinton is one of two DeKalb County School District transportation workers to die of the virus this week. Martha Campbell, a bus supervisor in the district for four years, also died. Their deaths come as school districts across the country face a severe shortage of bus drivers.
According to a national survey, more than half of American school districts report that their driver shortage is “severe” or “desperate.” Many drivers retired during the pandemic, and some are now afraid of face-to-face interactions with potentially infected children.
“We shouldn’t be doing face-to-face classes,” Jasvis said. “It should always be virtual. “
The DeKalb County School District issued the following statement in response to the deaths of Hinton and Campbell:
“The DeKalb County School District extends its condolences to the families of Martha Campbell and Larry Hinton. Ms. Campbell was a district bus supervisor for four years and Mr. Hinton was a bus driver for 24 years. They have represented their roles in an exemplary manner. Their families are in the thoughts and prayers of DCSD.
“He was a family man first,” Hinton said of his father. “He was working all the time. He never sat down. He will be truly missed.
Not only are the Hinton family grappling with the loss of their father, their aunt died of complications on Thursday. Two cousins are also currently fighting the virus.
