Larry Cohen, whose cult horror film It's alive spawned two suites and remains a fan favorite, has passed away. He was 77 years old and died Saturday night in Los Angeles. His death is announced on his official Facebook page.
"The entire team of #KingCohen mourns the loss of its star, its hero and king, #LarryCohen," reads Facebook. "His unprecedented talents have been surpassed only by his giant heart. The impact he has had on television and movies will be felt forever and our deepest condolences go out to his family, his friends and his fans. "
Cohen was born on July 15, 1941 in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan. He then specialized in film studies at the City College of New York.
He began his career in entertainment in the 1950s, working for NBC-TV and learning the ropes of production and storytelling. He created the TV series The invaders and Mark, also writing episodes of The defenders and The fugitive.
He turned to the cinema in the 1970s, writing and directing It's alive in 1974, which brought in seven million and generated two suites for Warner Bros.
Cohen continued working in the film industry during the 1980s, but focused on scriptwriting in the 2000s, writing Colin Farrell's vehicle. Telephone booth in 2002.
His sister was the publicist Ronni Chasen, who died during a robbery in Beverly Hills in 2010.
