The Mets did it in the past. The most famous example is the format that the team decided to use for Bobby Bonilla in which they pay him $ 1 million a year, in which they pay him $ 1.19 million a year from 2011 to 2035.

More recently, the Mets have done it with David Wright as detailed by Ken Davidoff of the New York Post. The right-hander will start the opening day tomorrow against Max Scherzer and Washington nationals.

Ronald Blum from The Associated Press reports that $ 12 million of each of its 2020 and 2023 seasons will be deferred, while $ 13.5 million will be in 2021 and $ 15 million in 2022. Meanwhile, $ 15 million will be deferred for its option to club 2024, if exercised.

The money will be payable 15 years after being earned on July 1 of the season in question, which would make it start in 2035 and end in 2039 if the team had to exercise the option.
