Detroit Residents 60 and Over With Certain Medical Conditions Can Now Receive COVID-19 Vaccine

STRAIT – Residents of Detroit aged 60 and over with certain chronic conditions can now the COVID-19 vaccine, Mayor Mike Duggan mentionned.

“Detroit is committed to making vaccines available to all of our most vulnerable residents,” Duggan said. “People with diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, or other chronic illnesses have death rates from COVID much higher than the general population.”

The vaccinations will take place at the TCF Center, Duggan said. Eligible residents must make an appointment at the TCF from Wednesday call 313-230-0505.

Wheelchair accessible transportation can be arranged by call 313-208-7364.

She called Wednesday’s announcement “a big step forward in reducing the worst effects of COVID.”

Among the conditions included are:

• Cancer (current and in remission)

• Asthma

• Heart disease

• Hypertension

• Sickle cell anemia

• Cerebrovascular disease

• Chronic kidney disease

• Pulmonary fibrosis

• HIV

• COPD

• Type 1 or 2 diabetes

• Alzheimer’s disease

• Dementia

• Cystic fibrosis

• Cardiomyopathy

• Liver disease

• Dementia

• Coronary artery disease

Meetings will be available this week, depending on the city.

When patients arrive for their appointments, they will be asked to present evidence of their medical condition, such as a note from the health care provider, an insurance record, a prescription bottle, or any other document that checks their condition.

Last week, Duggan made residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their live-in caregivers eligible for the vaccine. He also announced Senior Saturdays – a series of weekend vaccination events for Detroiters aged 65 or older.

Duggan announced a program to provide $ 2 rides to the TCF center for residents of Detroit who do not have their own transportation. This program includes wheelchair accessible vehicles for people with physical disabilities.

Here is the updated list of eligible Detroit residents who can book TCF Center appointments.:

• Food service workers, including grocery store, restaurant, meat packing, and food and beverage handling workers living or working in Detroit.

• Security guards and janitors living or working in Detroit.

• Any resident of Detroit 65 years of age or older (born 1955 or earlier).

• Kindergarten to Grade 12 teachers, support staff and child care staff.

• S. Employees of the post office who live or work in Detroit.

• Employees of the City of Detroit or city-related agencies who work from their usual job site (employees working from home are not eligible at this time).

• State and Federal Law Enforcement working in Detroit.

• Members of the clergy interact with members of their congregation.

• Funeral home / morgue workers working in Detroit.

• Paid and unpaid people in health care settings who may be exposed directly or indirectly to patients or infectious material working in Detroit.

• Members of the city’s disability community.

• Home health care workers living in Detroit.

• Residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their live-in caregivers.

• Residents 60 years of age and over with chronic health problems.

Vaccinations will be administered by appointment only.

Workers and residents will not be vaccinated without making an appointment by calling 313-230-0505.

Grocery store and security guards who make appointments will need to provide their name, home address and age.

For efficiency and convenience, the City recommends that, where possible, eligible family members or neighbors plan jointly and arrive in the same vehicle.

Core Group B workers will be required to provide their employer’s name and last pay stub to verify eligibility.

Appointments should last about an hour after entering the TCF garage.

Anyone who makes an appointment will be given two appointment dates – one for the first dose and another for the required second dose.

Call center staff members will contact each scheduled person prior to their second appointment to remind them. Residents will be given specific instructions on when and where to arrive at the TCF center and where to complete a basic consent form.

After being vaccinated, residents should stay in their vehicle inside the TCF garage for approximately 15 minutes to ensure they have no side effects. Medical staff will be on hand to help anyone who experiences side effects.
