According to an analysis of fossils of jaws, dinosaurs of the size of wallabies ran in Australia 125 million years ago.
Galleonosaurus dorisae is the first dinosaur of this type identified in the Gippsland area, southeast of Melbourne, for more than a decade, according to a report published Monday in the Journal of Paleontology, which has been peer reviewed.
The small dinosaurs were considered "agile runners" that measured just over two feet, said Matthew Herne, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of New England.
Herne said UNITED STATES TODAY & # 39; HUI Although dinosaurs are similar in size to a wallaby, they do not look like furry animals.

"The Galleonosaurus would have had a horizontal body, a long tail, powerful hind legs with three functional toes, short arms and a rather small head, with big eyes," Herne said.
It is not known whether Galleonosaurus was a feathered or scaled creature, but Herne said the scales are most likely based on his other ornithopod-eating, plant-eating relatives.
With this discovery, there are now five small ornithopods that have been named from the Austro-Antarctic Rift Valley, which means that the diversity of dinosaurs ranging from turkey to emu size was exceptionally high here, said Herne.
