With the increase in COVID-19 cases in San Luis Obispo County, health officials say they are also seeing positive cases appearing in local schools.

The San Luis Obispo County Public Health Department said Wednesday that about 30 K-12 schools in the county were aware of one or more cases of COVID-19.

Health officials have not identified the affected schools, but say many cases are linked to sports or social activities at school that take place before or after sporting events.

“When we or a school becomes aware of a positive case associated with their campus, we coordinate the follow-up activities. School staff check attendance records, class schedules, and seating charts to find and educate others on campus about potential exhibits. In addition to informing public health of close contacts, school staff also notify affected families and provide quarantine instructions, ”the health department said in a statement to KSBY.

Health officials add that they provide off-campus case investigation, contact tracing and notifications and also provide technical support to school staff.

San Luis Obispo County on Tuesday reported 460 new COVID-19 cases since Friday and five additional deaths.
