Special Forces wins Grade 2 Autumn Stakes at Woodbine Racetrack.
After losing the 2019 Durham Cup Grade 3 by the nose, Special Forces made its 2021 try a winning try, taking the stakes of 1 1/16 mile half a length from the winner of the 2019 Belmont Stakes Sir Winston at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario.
Led by jockey Justin Stein, the Special Forces raced the last of the top five, with Tap It to Win taking the lead in the opening strides of the race. Stein kept the 6-year-old gelding out of Sir Winston, waiting for the far turn to swing three wide as Tap It to Win and Halo Again battled for the lead. In the stretch, the two leaders continued to fight, Halo Again taking over as Tap It to Win tired, with Mighty Heart, Sir Winston and the Special Forces regrouped outside them. Stein sent special forces to run on the outside of Halo Again in the last stadium, with Sir Winson trying to pull them apart in an attempt to take the lead.
When Halo Again sank down slightly, hitting Sir Winston, Special Forces were able to pull forward to strike the wire in front. Halo Again, Mighty Heart and Tap It to Win rounded out the pack. The final time for 1 1/16 miles was 1: 42.36 on the Woodbine all-weather course.
The investigation panel is set up after Halo Again and Sir Winson contact. The commissioners did not change the order of arrival.
Special forces paid $ 15.60, $ 4.80 and $ 4.10. Sir Winston paid $ 3.20 and $ 3.10. Halo Again paid $ 5.10.
Raised in Kentucky by Machmer Hall, Carrie Brogden and Craig Brogden, Special Forces is by Ride candy (ARG) from Special Me, Unbridled’s Song mare. He is co-owned by Soli Mehta and trainer Kevin Attard. Special Forces was shipped by Select Sales and sold to Global Thoroughbreds for $ 220,000 at the September 2016 Keeneland Yearling Sale. The G3 Durham Cup is the gelding’s first victory in 2021, setting a lifetime record of six wins in 20 starts.
