Angelica Martinez, a junior at Eisenhower High School, was recently chosen from among nine other students from across the country to participate in the Frances Hesselbein Student Leadership Program (FHSLP) at the United States Military Academy in West Point, NY.

Students selected to attend the FHSLP represent seven states across the country and have military affiliations.

“I am looking forward to the new experience I will have at West Point and bonding with other students with similar passions,” Martinez said. “We’re going to be doing a lot of fun activities like an escape room and rock climbing. I’m also excited to learn how to be a better leader from other leaders. “

FHSLP is a semester leadership opportunity for sophomores and juniors who are members of the MCEC Student 2 Student program in their schools. Students selected in the fall will travel to West Point, while students selected in the spring will attend the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

“I participated in the FHSLP last year via Zoom and it was an amazing experience. I know I would learn even more and really enjoy the experience of being there in person, ”said Martinez. “Traveling to West Point and having first hand experiences would have a lasting impact on me and would be a big but welcome change from what I’m used to.”

I would first like to thank the community for all the support I have received. I would also like to strongly encourage anyone, military child or not, to find out about their school’s Student 2 military student / child club, ”Martinez said. “It’s always open to everyone and can open up some amazing opportunities like the one I have with FHSLP for someone.”

Applications for this class were limited to only U.S. S2S (CONUS) programs due to COVID-related health and safety concerns that could limit the participation of international students (OCONUS). The MCEC is evaluating options for the spring and will provide updates with the official announcement of nominations in early 2022.
