Elon Musk explains how Tesla Cybertruck’s lack of door handles will work

Elon Musk was quick to talk about how Tesla Cybertruck’s lack of door handles would work, which is basically as expected.

After the Cybertruck concept launched in November 2019, Musk said Tesla plans to update the design of the electric pickup before production.

There were several discussions about the design and size changes, but ultimately Musk said Tesla decided to keep the design extremely similar to the original concept.

One of the only changes Musk confirmed is that the production version of the Cybertruck will not feature door handles, unlike the original concept, as pictured above.

When the CEO confirmed the change, he did not say which system would replace the door handles.

Musk has now confirmed that the Cybertruck will detect that you are approaching a door and open it for you:

It’s the same system Tesla first introduced in the original Model X years ago.

The car detects your key fob or phone (if it has been set as a key in the Tesla app) and an actuator opens the door when you approach.

The other change Musk revealed is that the Tesla Cybertruck will feature independent rear wheel steering – something he mentioned again today.

Tesla is trying to put the Cybertruck into production by the end of the year, and Musk has said the automaker will try to market the two high-end versions first.

These two electric trucks will have between 300 and 500 miles of range and will be equipped with powertrains with two and three engines.

However, Musk also warned that delays are possible as Tesla is still working on the construction of the Gigafactory Texas, where the Cybertruck is going to be produced, and the company would face challenges since the electric van is designed with an exoskeleton.

This could push back the first deliveries to 2022, when the Cybertruck has more competition in the electric pickup segment.

Beyond its unique design, the Cybertruck will also bring other exciting features to market, including a retractable solar bed cover.
