Elon Musk has been selected as one of the recipients of the Stephen Hawking Medal for the Science Communication of 2019, an award created in honor of the legendary theoretical physicist for the benefit of people who raise public awareness to science. The CEO of SpaceX and Tesla will receive the Stephen Hawking Medal at the Starmus Festival next June in Zurich, Switzerland.
The Stephen Hawking Medal for Scientific Communication is a prestigious award in the scientific community. It was presented in 2015 at the Royal Society of London by a panel including the theoretical physicist himself. The medal honors members of three communities: the scientific community, the arts community and the film community. When he personally handed the medals to the Starmus Festival in June 2016, Hawking noted that the prize "counts for me, for you, for the whole world".
Elon Musk will receive the Stephen Hawking Medal for the scientific community for his "astonishing achievements in the field of space travel and for humanity," according to Starmus in a press release. Brian May, a founding member of Starmus and a Ph.D. astrophysicist, will personally present the medal to Musk, who has been described by evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins as a "hero of our time."
This year, musician Brian Eno has also been awarded the Stephen Hawking Medal for Scientific Communication, for his contribution to popular science, and Todd Douglas Miller's documentary. Apollo 11, which offers a "decisive look" at the mission that brought man to the moon.
The next Starmus Festival should be celebrated by some of the most prolific individuals in the scientific community. Educator Bill Nye will host ceremonies and other personalities such as Apollo 11 astronaut Michael Collins and six other Apollo mission astronauts will be in attendance. Sir Michael Hintze, founder and executive chairman of CQS asset management group and one of Starmus supporters, expressed his enthusiasm for this year's awards.

This year's awards are the first to be awarded since the passing of Stephen Hawking, who personally invited Musk to Starmus before his death. Starmus pointed out that this year's awards are dedicated to Hawking's legacy and that they are awarded to him in recognition of his affinity for applied technology.
Elon Musk is a polarizing figure in mainstream media today due in part to his status as celebrity CEO and the public character of his company of electric cars and energy, Tesla. Nevertheless, Musk has received many accolades over the years. Just last January, Musk was dubbed the "disruptive of the year" for having created the largest number of waves in the auto industry. Last year, Musk was also named one of the top 2018 CEOs by Tesla and SpaceX employees, likely because of his bold and concrete leadership style.
For example, at the time of ramp 3, Musk hit the headlines after being seen tightening bolts with Tesla workers during the rapid construction of GA4. Musk would also have been used as the main test subject for the autopilot, running aggressive test versions of the driver assistance system to check for bugs and system capacity limitations. A member of Tesla's autopilot team previously said that this had resulted in Musk finding himself in "situations in which many of us would not want to be."
