Elon Musk holds secret US government clearance for SpaceX's founder and CEO role, but it was revealed that his authorization was being revised at the Pentagon after Musk smoked marijuana in September latest.
As Bloomberg reported, in September, Musk appeared on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast in California and started smoking marijuana during the recording. Although marijuana has been decriminalized in a number of states, it is still forbidden for federal employees or contractors with a security clearance to use it.
To be able to work for the government, which Musk is doing through SpaceX as a government contractor, a standard form 86 (SF 86) must be completed. This allows the government to collect information for background investigations, assessments and retention of status or authorization. The form also asks an individual to report any illegal drug use he or she has suffered.
Musk repeated his SF 86 after the appearance of the podcast and a US official confirmed that the Pentagon was watching him. A SpaceX official who asked to remain anonymous also confirmed that any review of Musk's permissions with the government would have no impact on SpaceX's operations. The company is led by Gwynne Shotwell, President and Chief Operating Officer, and not directly by Musk.
For the moment, the Ministry of Defense is only following the protocol and reviewing the application based on reclassification information and new information presented. It's possible that Musk will lose his permission because of his actions, but that's a problem that Musk has to deal with, not SpaceX.
Elon Musk is not one to avoid controversy or disturb departments. Also in September of last year, the Justice Department examined him and revealed to him that he had committed fraud as a result of tweets suggesting that the entrepreneur was going to make some Tesla a private matter. It seems unlikely that a security clearance review disturbs him too much.
