The Student Union Board at Elon University has announced that American rapper and singer Bryce Vine will headline this year’s fall concert.
Vine made her breakthrough when “Drew Barrymore” went viral in 2019. Currently on tour, Vine has several concerts coming up, including one at Elon.
While the fall concert normally takes place during Reunion Weekend in November, this year’s event will be changed to a new time. SUB President Emily Sanderson said the change to the concert in early October is an attempt to space the fall calendar with big events that students can attend throughout the semester.
“We hope that removing the fall concert from the Homecoming agenda will reduce the pressure on university resource providers,” said Sanderson.
The change also allows SUB to access a larger pool of artist talent due to increased date flexibility. Several artists, whose names SUB did not disclose, were reportedly considered when planning this year’s fall concert. After reviewing student polls following rapper T-Pain’s performance in 2019, an intermediary agent was used to review other artists. Vine was the result of this data.
“We really thought Bryce Vine was the best option for Elon,” Sanderson said. “We looked at other artists, but based just on his music and what the students wanted, we really thought he would be the best.”
Despite SUB’s intentions, junior Danny Broussard said he had never heard of Vine and was not considering buying a ticket.
“I’ve never heard of this guy, I’ve never listened to his music. I’m not really excited because I don’t feel like this will be the kind of artist I’ll listen to, ”said Broussard.
Sanderson said it’s hard to say what the turnout will be for the fall concert.
“We got a lot of good feedback, but obviously the students have to come in and buy the tickets,” Sanderson said. “Students usually buy them closer to the concert. “
SUB is working with the Healthy Elon committee to define COVID-19 precautions for the concert. From now on, masks will be mandatory as with all other SUB events on campus.
Even though the start of 2020 and the summons for new students have been moved outside due to COVID-19, there are no plans to move the concert outside at this time. This is due to comments Sanderson said came from the Elon community about students wanting the concert to stay at the Schar Center. In 2018, SUB received a one-time special allocation from SGA to fund a great concert experience at the Schar Center.
“We received positive feedback from the Elon community about the experience and that the students wanted the concert to stay in Schar,” said Sanderson. “To deliver the best possible experience, we need to bring in a higher caliber artist who appeals to the entire Elon community. This requires additional funds, which is why there is a cost for all tickets. We used this model in 2019 and got such great feedback that we will do it again. “
Tickets for the event are $ 10 for students and $ 20 for faculty and staff. Tickets will be available for purchase online at elontickets.com until October 3 and will be distributed on a first come, first served basis.
