The State Council of Land and Natural Resources on Friday approved a revocable permit to Diamond Resorts International Club Inc. to repair erosion structures in place in front of the Kaanapali Beach Club in Honokowai.

The permit would allow entry into submerged land to repair an existing temporary erosion control structure; an erosion protection skirt and a sand mattress coating currently face the complex.

The damaged portion of the erosion skirt is 140 feet long and is concentrated along the southern portion of the material, which is more exposed to wave action, according to official documents.

No further expansion or improvement will be involved.

Since its installation in May 2018, there has been subsequent damage to the erosion control structure.

The installation was caused by significant erosion in the region from January to June 2016, as a combination of persistent North Pacific swells and high water levels produced strong waves, strong currents and unusually high tides.

The shoreline has receded more than 10 feet in a matter of months, as opposed to the historic average annual erosion rate of 1 foot per year. About 5,700 square feet of area has been permanently lost due to erosion, according to the documents.
