Plans are underway for the first annual fall festival.
Washington County Commissioners invited people from different organizations to meet with them last Tuesday to discuss the fall festival, which will be held on Saturday, October 2. This weekend, Saturday and Sunday, will feature a National Championship Cup competition, in which up to 500 teams will participate. .
The city of Akron will sponsor a street dance on Friday October 1 to start the activities. On Saturday, the county plans to hold a number of activities at the fairgrounds. Right now, they are planning a petting zoo, pumpkin patch, pumpkin carvings, haunted house, different vendors, and other activities, such as face painting. If other organizations would like to do an activity or have other suggestions as to what can be organized, please call the Commissioner’s office and let them know.
Saturday will begin with the Akron Volunteer Fire Department’s annual community breakfast from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. at the fire hall. They will also raffle the winners of their annual boarding house raffle over breakfast. The activities will then move to the exhibition center. The Sam Cox Band will be the main actor of the concert. If you want to go see what’s going on, there will be no spectator charge. The commissioners will keep the price as low as possible. 
During Tuesday’s meeting, several ideas were brought forward and progress was made on who could help with the activities and different ideas on what could be organized. It has been discussed whether the rides will take place on Saturdays, but it is so difficult to get help to operate the rides that it was felt that they would not open the carnival rides. Liability is also an issue, as it would cost the county $ 3,000 in insurance for that day.
At this point everything is on hold and no firm decision on anything has been made. Ideas have been given on what could be done and the volunteers will be gathering more information for everyone. Another meeting will be scheduled soon. The commissioners want it to be a fun event for everyone, whether you live in the county or not, because they want to make it a popular annual event and something people will look forward to attending every year.
